🐈 Can My Cat Eat Watermelon?

Watermelon is one of the safer fruits to offer cats, mainly because it's mostly water. On hot days, a few small cubes of watermelon can help keep your cat hydrated. It contains some vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium. However, since cats can't taste sweetness, many cats aren't particularly interested in watermelon — they may be more curious about the texture than the flavor. The sugar content, while low compared to many fruits, is still not ideal for cats whose digestive systems are designed for protein, not carbohydrates. Keep portions very small — a few thumbnail-sized pieces at most.

Remove all seeds and cut away the rind completely. Cut the red flesh into very small cubes. Offer 2-3 small pieces and see if your cat is interested. Refrigerated watermelon can be extra appealing on warm days.

For hydration, fresh water or a cat water fountain is always best. For treats, small pieces of plain cooked chicken or fish are more nutritionally appropriate for cats.
