Cats lack the taste receptors for sweetness, so unlike dogs, most cats aren't particularly attracted to bananas. Some cats may show curiosity about the texture or smell, but many actively dislike them. Nutritionally, bananas offer nothing a cat needs — cats require animal-based protein, taurine, and specific fatty acids that bananas don't contain. The sugar and carbohydrates in bananas are actually poorly suited for a cat's metabolism, which is designed to process protein and fat, not carbohydrates. In excess, the sugar could contribute to obesity and diabetes. If your cat does enjoy banana, limit it to a small bite-sized piece no more than once or twice a week.

Peel the banana and offer a tiny piece (about the size of your thumbnail). Most cats will sniff it and walk away. If your cat eats it and enjoys it, that's fine as an occasional rare treat.

Better treats for cats include small pieces of plain cooked chicken, a few bits of cooked salmon, or commercial cat treats specifically formulated for feline nutrition.
