🐈 Can My Cat Eat Sardine?

Sardines are one of the best fish options for cats. They're small, low on the food chain, and therefore accumulate far less mercury than larger fish like tuna or salmon. They're packed with omega-3 fatty acids which support skin and coat health, reduce inflammation, and may benefit cats with arthritis or joint issues. Sardines also provide vitamin D, vitamin B12, calcium (from the bones), and high-quality protein. The strong fishy smell makes them irresistible to most cats. Choose canned sardines in water with no added salt — sardines in oil add unnecessary fat, and those in tomato sauce often contain onion, garlic, or spices that are toxic to cats. Fresh sardines are also excellent if available — cook them plain.

Drain canned sardines packed in water. Break into small pieces or mash with a fork. Serve a small portion (half to one sardine) as a treat or meal topper. For fresh sardines: bake or steam plain until fully cooked, debone, and serve in small pieces.

Other great fish options for cats: cooked salmon (omega-3 rich), cooked cod (mild, lean), cooked shrimp (low calorie), and small amounts of canned tuna in water (limit due to higher mercury).
