Most adult cats are lactose intolerant because they produce less lactase enzyme after weaning. Yogurt is better tolerated than milk because bacterial cultures break down much of the lactose during fermentation. Plain yogurt provides protein, calcium, and beneficial probiotics that may support digestive health. Greek yogurt is preferable as it contains less lactose and more protein. However, never give cats flavored yogurt (sugar, artificial sweeteners), chocolate yogurt (toxic), or yogurt with fruit mix-ins that may contain grapes (toxic).

Lactose-tolerant cats: no issues with small amounts. Lactose-intolerant cats: diarrhea, gas, bloating, stomach cramps within a few hours of consumption.

Start with less than a teaspoon and observe for 24 hours. If no digestive issues, you can offer small amounts occasionally. If diarrhea or vomiting occurs, your cat is lactose intolerant — avoid dairy.

Cat-specific probiotic supplements, small amounts of cooked chicken, and commercial cat treats are safer alternatives.
